London-based indie-folk band Night Flight releases "Dreaming," the first taste of new music from its forthcoming Songs From Echo Zoo EP. Led by singer-songwriter Sam Holmes, along with members Harry Phillips, Dan Webb and Oliver Halvorsen, Night Flight spent most of 2020 developing ideas and recording, gearing up for an exciting release schedule this year. They continue to work with producer James Mottershead (The Magic Gang, Slaves) with whom they created prior EPs Carousel, White Noise and the double EP Night Flight.
"Dreaming" immediately caught my attention with its infectiously melodic intro that bursts with glistening guitar hooks in the styles of Johnny Marr (The Smiths), The Railway Children and Doves. Sam's emotive, heartfelt vocals tell the tale of the immediate chemistry between two people who meet on the street, dreaming of possibilities of a new life in a flash of gold.
"Did you catch yourself dreaming again?
Did you catch yourself all over again?
Have you lost yourself in that feeling again?"
Speaking of chemistry, it's clear that there's a great deal of synergy and magic within the band in the composition and recording of "Dreaming." The performance and production is solid, tight and polished. This is soothing, uplifting sonic medicine for the soul. The overall, beautifully-textured sound in "Dreaming" and Night Flight's previous releases has drawn comparisons to contemporary artists such as War on Drugs, Fleet Foxes and Kevin Morby.
And if you're obsessed with the gorgeous guitar hooks in "Dreaming," you're in luck. Check out the band's Instagram page for a virtual guitar tutorial from Night Flight's Harry Phillips, where he provides some nice, detailed instructions and tips for learning to play the riffs on your own.
Finally, we close with an impressive video clip from a recent Sofar Sounds performance from Night Flight where they deliver a spot-on, sounds-just-like-the-studio-recording version of "Dreaming." The performance was engineered & mixed By Tom Hill, with editing by Sam Holmes.
