Toronto-based indie singer-songwriter Cal Trask wrapped up 2021 by releasing his melancholic and mesmerizing cover of Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle" on New Year's Eve. The talented and self-proclaimed 'sad boy singing sad songs' teamed up with artist and producer Stay Loose (StéLouse) to immerse this downtempo, piano-driven ballad in expansive, atmospheric layers.
Jimmy Eat World's charged and upbeat original of "The Middle" has always been one of my favorite songs, but this cover version really gives the song a refreshing and unique new depth that suits it well. Cal's expressive, heartfelt and yearning vocals are really the icing on the cake of this impressive cover song.
"It just takes some time
Little girl, you're in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything'll be just fine
Everything, everything'll be alright, alright"
While Cal's official cover of "The Middle" was released as the curtains of 2021 closed, the seeds of doing a unique take on the song were planted a year earlier. Watch the one-take video performance of Cal's hypnotic piano cover of the "The Middle" from late 2020.
