I was unfamiliar with Nashville-based singer-songwriter Angel Snow until I heard an acoustic version of her song "Photographs" on a Spotify playlist a few months ago. I absolutely love this track, and took a listen to Magnetic (2017, Nettwerk Music), Angel Snow's most recent full-length album. I can't stop listening to it now - it's one of the most atmospheric and hypnotic long plays I've heard in a long time.
Named as "Nashville's next stealth pop weapon" by Music Row magazine, Angel Snow self-released her first two albums - Fortune Teller (2007), and Angel Snow (2012) - before signing to Nettwerk Music for Magnetic. Her songwriting credits include three contributions to Grammy-award winning singer Alison Krauss & Union Station's album, Paper Airplane (2011). Those three tracks ("Lie Awake," "These Days" and "A Place Outside") are also featured on Angel's 2012 self-titled album.
Magnetic elegantly weaves together eleven of Angel's songs within a spacious, electronic soundscape interlaced with minimal elements of acoustic guitar, piano and bass. Angel's mesmerizing voice gracefully and powerfully soars throughout each song. The impressive electronic, ambient sound of Magnetic is a reflection of the superb production by Lee Groves (Goldfrapp, Depeche Mode). Every song on this album is outstanding on its own. My favorites include "I Need You" (with a minimal Depeche Mode-like electronic treatment), "Photographs" (lovely harmony, nice acoustic touch), "I Remember" (breathtaking, emotional vocals that will give you goosebumps), and "Secret" (gentle, pulsing and melodic intro that builds tempo as the song progresses).
Have a listen to Magnetic for yourself to take in this lovely, ambient release from Angel Snow. For a bit of visual accompaniment, also check out the official music video for "I Need You," directed by Tim Cofield.
