Formed in the dormant hills of the Topanga Canyon, California-based alternative/shoegaze band Sun Colony releases their stunning debut EP - simply titled Sun Colony. It was just a few months ago that we first heard the band's impressive debut single, "Satellite" - a melodic, dreamlike journey with pulsing rhythm, presented with Sun Colony's signature sound.
The band is comprised Tommy Graf (vocals), Derek Mabra (guitar, synths), Lauren Andino (guitar), and Michael Quinn (drums). Citing influences the likes of Echo & The Bunnymen, Wire, and Primal Scream, Sun Colony crafts a fresh, vibrant sound that's warmly reminiscent of late 80's/early 90's alternative/goth rock with a polished, modern take on it - think The Cult and Stone Roses with a dash of Kurt Vile added to the mix. In the band's own words (from their official website), their music is "Recommended for escapists, surrealists, and the sonically possessed."
The EP was recorded at Honeyland Studio in Topanga Canyon, CA, mixed by James Aparico, and mastered by Kyle Mullarky. The five tracks on this outstanding release present a wall of ethereal, melodic soundscapes, with swirling guitars, driving bass and dreamlike, droning vocals that perfectly complement the music.
The opening track, "These Minds," is superb and sets the tone for the remainder of the EP. The following live performance of this track presents the essence of Sun Colony's excellent songwriting and a glimpse into their live performance.
